Dark Lips

Dark lips are common problems but can make you look older than you are. Dark lips also make it difficult for you to pick the right shade of lipstick. You need to determine what causes them to become dark in color so that you can find the right treatment to lighten your dark lips.

Dark lipsCauses of Dark Lips

– Exposure to the sun: Ultraviolet rays cause your body to increase the produce of a pigment called melanin. High concentrations of melanin lead to discoloration in the skin. UV rays also cause lip wrinkles.

– Smoking: Nicotine causes stain which makes your lips getting darker and darker.

– Tea and coffee: Coffee and tea also stain your teeth and darken the lips.

– Cosmetics: Lipsticks that are old or expired and that are manufactured by unknown companies can cause your lips to become dark. Using low-quality lipsticks can permanently darken your lips over time due to the harsh chemicals they contain.

– Dryness: Prolonged chapping and drying of lips can lead to dark lips.

– Unhealthy habits: Licking makes your lips dry and eventually dark.

– Heredity: If your family members have dark lips, you may too. If your dark lips are caused by heredity, you can reduce the darkness only temporarily. Once you stop a treatment you have applied to the lips, they will turn back to their normal color.

– Allergic reactions: A food allergy or a bacterial allergy can also make your lips dark.

How to Lighten Dark Lips?

– Wear lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen to hydrate the lips and prevent them from UV rays.

– Exfoliate your lips every morning. After you brush your teeth, use your wet toothbrush to exfoliate your lips in a circular motion. Apply lip balm immediately after brushing them. You can also use a lip scrub to exfoliate your lips. Exfoliation helps prevent chapped lips and remove dead skin cells and stain.

– Always remove the lipsticks when not needed. Use a safe makeup remover such as petroleum jelly.

– Apply a bit of lemon juice or a mixture of lemon juice and glycerin to your lips. Then rub the lips gently with your fingers to remove dead skin. Lemon is the bleaching agent which helps remove darkness from your lips.

– Apply honey on your dark lips. Leave on for about 15 minutes and then rinse with water. Do this three to four times in a week.

– Apply concealer before putting on your lipstick. Be sure to use a lip moisturizer first. This quick fix can hide the dark color.

– Quit Smoking. Stains caused by smoking should decrease within a month after you exfoliate your lips and apply lemon juice every day.
